Wasps and bees WASPS AND HONEYBEES
Active Pest Control
HONEYBEES: Honeybees often leave commercial hives and settle in and around houses. When established between walls they present special problems. If the services of an apiarist are available, the unpleasant task of killing the hive can be avoided, but usually such a problem must be dealt with urgently. Where necessary, the hive must be killed particularly when allergic people are likely to be stung. It is important that the bee is correctly identified because the native honeybee does not sting and it is unnecessary to kill the hive.
PAPERNEST WASPS: These indigenous wasps are social insects with female, male and worker castes living in a papery nest, which is often found under the eaves of a house attached to the surface by a small strong stalk. Although there is usually only about twenty in a nest, they may be aggressive when provoked. The adults prey on other insects, but if disturbed can sting several times.
EUROPEAN WASPS: The European wasp is a recently introduced species to Australia. The workers of the colony are sterile females with full wings, which cover their bodies with horizontal yellow bands. Recognition of the nest is important. They are in the ground, often near an old tree stump, in gardens and rockeries. They will sometimes make nests in walls and roof cavities coming and going often to collect food. (It is strongly recommended that a Pest Control Technician treat European Wasps).
TREATMENT: Sprays are the most effective method of eradicating bees and wasps if the nest is in an accessible position such as a tree branch or under the eaves of a house. Dust will flush the bees or wasps out of the nest but they take longer to succumb. Sprays tend to achieve a much faster knockdown effect. Early morning and late afternoon is the ideal time to treat these nests as the insects will most likely be still inactive inside the nest.
