BIRD LICE AND MITES
Active Pest Control
Bird mites are commonly associated with the pigeon and sparrow. They are a blood-sucking parasite of these birds. They often become a problem for humans when separated from the host birds, and are in search of food. Mites belong to the Insect Order Acarina and the most commonly encountered are the Tropical Fowl mite, the Red Poultry mite and the Starling mite. They can be up to 1mm in length and are a yellowy-greyish colour but turn red after feeding.

EXCLUSION
: The most effective method of exclusion is to prevent the roosting and nesting of the pest birds in buildings. Bird proofing, which can be carried out by Active Pest Control, effectively achieves this or some homeowners may prefer to do this themselves.

TREATMENT: Affected bed linen needs to be placed in sealed black plastic bags and placed outside for several hours in a hot, sunny position. Linen should then be laundered in the usual way. The ceiling cavity must be thoroughly inspected and any remaining nests and debris removed. The ceiling would then be treated with insecticide dust to kill any remaining mites. It is important to carry out preventative measures at this point to block entry from pest birds
